Jude Bellingham avoids punishment from Spanish FA after alleged Mason Greenwood slur
Jude Bellingham has been cleared of any wrongdoing regarding the alleged slur directed at Manchester United’s on-loan forward, Mason Greenwood, during a match last month. The Spanish FA (RFEF) dismissed the case against Bellingham, who was accused of using an offensive term during Real Madrid’s game against Getafe on February 1.
Television cameras captured Bellingham uttering a two-syllable word in Greenwood’s direction after a tackle, but the precise nature of the comment was not picked up by pitchside microphones. Getafe reported the incident, leading to an investigation by the RFEF, which included employing a lip-reading expert.
Despite efforts to decipher the words spoken, the RFEF concluded that there was insufficient credible evidence regarding the alleged slur. Consequently, Bellingham will not face any disciplinary action.
Mason Greenwood joined Getafe last summer, following an internal investigation by Manchester United. This investigation recommended that Greenwood restart his career elsewhere after he faced accusations of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault in January 2022. Although all charges against Greenwood were dropped in February of the same year, United faced criticism over considering his return to the first team.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s new co-owner, has now suggested that a fresh decision will be made regarding Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford, leaving the possibility open for his return to the club.
